Volvo Vision 2020 Concept Truck

Concept CarsPosted by Alexander Dramountanis Thu, February 03, 2011 20:35:49

Volvo Trucks have had an idea of revolutionizing the trucks of the future and generated ideas on how transportation of goods can be made more efficient and more environmentally friendly. The Vision 2020 concept truck is the creation they have made to show their aspiration and ambition.

Their vision is that in the future, trucks will travel across continents on "green" corridors. These will essentially be roads specifically for trucks. The trucks will be able to create wireless connections to eachother and form truck trains that thunder away through the green corridors in 90km/h.

When trucks travel together in a tight formation like this they decrease the air resistance and thus increase the efficiency.

The driver has also been thought of in this concept. An autopilot mode is availiable for the truck train mode and the chair has the possibility to recline and create a more comfortable ride for the driver. The lighting in the cabin has also been designed in zones that enables the driver to choose what he or she wants to have illuminated depending on the situation.

Safety is as always a big part of Volvo concepts and the Vision 2020 concept is no exception. At the bottom end of the front, an elongated nose has been added in order to create a deformation zone that will reduce the damage of a car in a frontal collision with the truck.

The design has been streamlined in order to further decrease the air resistance and to create a modern look. The indicators have been cleverly integrated in the grille and the old globetrotter sign on the roof has been designed to follow the rest of the design more harmonically. - Volvo Trucks

- The vision 2020 concept is a great idea, and so far just an idea. We still have to wait some time before we get to see it in reality and I believe it will take even longer than the year 2020 until we have the green corridors that are needed to get the most out of this concept. But as I said, it is a great idea that follows the trend of finding new and more efficient ways of transportation. The next step is of course to incorporate the technology in private cars as well, imagine that!
